Are Self-Limiting Beliefs Biting You in the Butt?

BITE BACK

A lot of times when I ask a client “What do you really, really want?” they tell me their dream and then follow it with a long list of reasons why it’s not going to happen for them.

For instance:

“I really want to get my Masters degree in nutrition, but it’s just so expensive and I don’t know how I will find the time and I’m worried I won’t be as available for my kids.”

Or:

“I really want to make exercise a habit, but I just have no discipline and no motivation.”

My advice = don’t argue for your limitations!

Make a case for your wants rather than against them.

You know the famous saying “whether you think you can or you think you can’t—you’re right”? That’s what I’m talking about!

Focusing on the reasons why you can’t do/be/have something becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Shifting your focus to what you do want and asking yourself questions like, “How can I make this happen?” or “Can I look at this from a different perspective?” are ways to move yourself toward your goals.

If you want to go to graduate school, can you see the expense as an investment? Can you brainstorm how to make time to study? Can you open yourself up to the idea that your kids might actually benefit from having you a little less available?

If you want to make exercise a habit, can you hire a trainer or find an accountability partner? Can you help yourself to stay motivated by tracking your stats/goals or participating in an online group with other people creating positive habits?

Sometimes we tell ourselves we *can’t* when what we really mean is that we know it will be hard.

It true, going for what you want might not be easy. That’s okay. Wrap your head around that. Sometimes doing hard stuff is rewarding in and of itself.

When we take on a challenge, commit ourselves, and stay the course it increases our confidence and sense of self-worth. That’s a huge win that extends beyond whatever goal has been achieved.
