There is something magical about starting and ending your day with things that nourish your mind, body, and spirit.
Over time I have developed some morning and evening habits or rituals that really help me to feel on purpose, clear in my intentions, and, well, kind of better attuned to life. These rituals are one of the most important ways that I practice self-care…they are ways of treating yourself with gentle compassion and moving from self-neglect into self-responsibility, self-acceptance, and eventually self-love.
Ideas for morning rituals:
Five to fifteen minutes of meditation (focusing on your breath or a mantra, or following a guided meditation)
Stating your intentions for the day either in writing or out loud
A few minutes of calisthenics, dance, or gentle stretches to wake up your body
A soothing cup of tea or room temperature water with lemon
Watching the outdoor world wake up either on your porch or out your window
Ideas for evening rituals:
Journal writing—reflect on the day, check in with your emotions, and set intentions for the next day
Gratitude practice--acknowledging the things—little or big—that you are grateful for today
A soothing bath with bubbles or scented oils
These activities are gentle ways of easing yourself into and out of the busyness and stress of day-to-day life. With regular practice, you may find that the calmness of your morning and evening rituals extends into your “real life” and that you are more centered and present throughout the day.
